Mexico Solidarity Network

Alex Khasnabish, McMaster University

The Mexico Solidarity Network (MSN) was formed in response to a massacre in Chiapas, Mexico on 22 December 1997. A paramilitary organization known as the Red Mask murdered forty-five Indigenous men and women who were Zapatista sympathizers and members of a human rights organization known as Las Abejas (The Bees), while they were praying for peace in the hamlet of Acteal. MSN began as an organization operating primarily in support of the Zapatistas. It has since expanded its focus to include not only US militarism and trade agreements but also issues related to labour, globalization, and immigrant rights. MSN is an international organization, bringing together over ninety organizations in the United States and coordinating larger actions. MSN coordinates delegations to Mexico on a variety of themes ranging from women's issues and globalization to the Zapatista struggle for Indigenous autonomy. It also arranges speaking tours and conducts public education campaigns in the United States and Canada.
